Prize-winning performer, composer and producer L.E. McCullough, Ph.D. is a pioneer and prime exponent of Celtic World Beat, an innovative musical fusion blending traditional Irish and British Isles folk music with contemporary genres from Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East.

L.E. has been performing and teaching traditional Irish music on tinwhistle and flute since 1972. Author of 121 Favorite Irish Session Tunes and The Complete Irish Tinwhistle Tutor, he has won several music competitions in Ireland and America and recorded on 45 albums for labels such as Angel, RCA, Sony Classical, Bluezette and Laserlight. In 1978 he earned a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh by authoring the first-ever dissertation on Irish traditional music, Irish Music in Chicago: An Ethnomusicological Study. Dr. McCullough has composed music for commercials, stage, film and ballet and performed on the scores of the Ken Burns PBS television series The West, Lewis & Clark, Not for Ourselves Alone and the Warner Brothers film Michael Collins.

He’s also performed, recorded and composed in idioms as varied as Cajun, country and bluegrass to French, blues and rock with Devilish Merry, Irish Airs, Bourreé Texane, Ernie Hawkins, Liz Carroll, Tony DeMarco, Jay Ungar & Molly Mason, Dwayne Thorpe, Richard Hughes, George Balderose, T.H. Gillespie, Cathy Morris, Jim Fox and more.

Now part of the New York City theatre milieu, he’s stepped up his composing for film and theatre soundtracks. You can read about his eclectic musical adventures in Biography, check out his rare-disc Discography and learn even more in Articles.

McCullough conjures up subtle, magical images of such legends as Pete Seeger, Jim Croce and Woody Guthrie. Yet, McCullough is his own man. He's new blood with new ideas. . . someone to pay attention to.”  — Kaleidoscope
